I wrote the essay "My Summer in an Evangelical Gulag" after arriving home from a trip to southern Kentucky where I witnessed a great deal of religious zealotry.

I think it's high time that Americans begin discussing in a rational manner the inherent dangers of religious ideology, specifically Christian fundamentalism.

Recently, many books have been published on this subject, most notably "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins, "The End of Faith" by Sam Harris, and "Breaking the Spell" by Daniel Dennett.

I encourage all people who prize rationalism and logic to read at least one of these books.

"Aggravated" is a very unusual story for me. It is one of those stories where the voice dictated not only the pace of the prose, but the pace of the writing process. I wrote the first draft in one evening. The story was, in fact, spurred by a particularly irritating cricket whom I couldn't track down.

"Aggravated" is part of my collection, Traveling Sitting Still, which is currently under production and should be available in bookstores in March. The version in Perigee's 15th issue includes a new ending written for the collection.

I hope you enjoy it, and pick up a copy of Traveling Sitting Still when it becomes available. (ISBN: 0-595-42238-1)

Thanks, Perigee folks, for publishing my poems.

I live in a remote valley on the west side of Oregon's Coast Range mountains, along with a husband and an enormous variety of wildlife.
